The holiday season is often celebrated as a time of joy, connection, and giving. But as beautiful as it is, this time of year can also bring a deep sense of reflection. For many of us, it's a season that highlights both the fullness and the fragility of life. We think about the loved ones we've lost or relationships we may have drifted from.
For parents of children with special needs, it's also a time to reflect on the unique journey of watching our children age, sometimes with gratitude, sometimes with a sense of uncertainty about what the future holds.
We may find ourselves navigating grief when others are celebrating the holiday season surrounded by carols, twinkling lights, shopping and planning for a big family event. When we start to notice more of what's missing during the holidays, it may be a really good time to reconnect with ourselves and others who we cherish.
Shifting Our Focus
While gift-giving and taking part in social activities is traditional for this time of the year, it's essential to remember that the true gift of the holiday season is the support and presence we offer one another. Whether it's a hug, or checking in on a friend that we know may be also struggling, our connection with each other is what matters most.
It's easy to feel depleted and overwhelmed by the increased activity in our neighborhoods; even going to your local grocery market may cause overstimulation and leave us exhausted. One way to start feeling better is to wish a complete stranger or the clerk at the check out, a happy holiday season. It's so important to care for ourselves during this busy season. Taking simple steps to prioritize our well-being not only helps us to show up better for our children and loved ones emotionally, but also helps us to stay physically healthy.
Here are a few simple tips for mindful holiday self-care:
Let's all approach this season with mindful hearts. Wishing you all a season of connection, peace, and joy.
