As the days shorten and we approach the fall equinox, many of us begin to feel the deeper stirrings of grief and reflection. For parents and caregivers of individuals with special needs, this time of year can hold a unique emotional weight, especially if you’ve lost someone, be it a beloved child, family member, or friend.
The holiday season often amplifies feelings of emptiness for that loved one, or a sense of loss. However, in the silence of the change in season, the fall equinox offers us a powerful opportunity. A natural moment to pause, reflect, and release.
This transition between summer and fall is not only a shift in season, but a shift in energy. It's a chance to look back on the summer and on what brought us joy. Also what caused us stress or anguish and to get ourselves ready to let go. Let go of guilt, sadness or judgments that so often accompany caregiving.
For me, the summer equinox revealed how easily I could get triggered about small annoyances (“mouse turds,” I call them!) which catapult me into big emotional reactions. Sound familiar? It’s okay. These moments are part of our body’s wisdom and responses from our deeper inner “laboratory” that there’s something to listen to and pay attention to.
As we step into fall, let’s embrace the gift of tuning into our bodies and feelings with gentleness. Grief doesn’t have to be a heavy burden. We can honor those we’ve lost by creating new rituals of remembrance. These can deliver us into a peaceful mind state, stimulate joy, and gratitude.
